THE RUPEE: Mixed patterns

The rupee moved both ways against the dollar on the money market on Thursday in the process of trading activity, they said.

INTER-BANK MARKET RATES: RATES: The rupee fell modestly versus the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 154.33 and Rs 154.40 respectively, they said.

OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee was unchanged in terms of the dollar for buying and selling Rs 154.20 and Rs 154.50 respectively, they noted. The rupee was trading in relation to the euro for buying and selling at Rs 167.30 and Rs 168.80 respectively, they said.

In the fourth Asian trade, the euro fell to a four-and-a-half-year low against the Swiss franc on Thursday and the yen gained as investors sought safe havens after China's Hubei province, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, reported a sharp increase in the number of new cases.

Using a new method of diagnosis, the province reported on Thursday 14,840 new cases of the virus as of Feb. 12, up from 1,638 new cases on Tuesday. The number of deaths in the province rose by 242, a daily record, to 1,310.

The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 71.473, the greenback was at 4.140 versus the Malaysian ringgi and the US currency was available at 6.984 in relation to the Chinese yuan.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The Pak rupee-greenback parity stayed unchanged amid sluggish trading activity in the local currency market on Thursday.

According to currency dealers, the greenback did not observe any change in its demand and supply situation throughout the trading session and ended at its opening trend for buying and selling at Rs 154.30 and Rs 154.60 respectively.

Furthermore, the local currency failed to sustain its day earlier recoveries against the pound sterling. Consequently, the pound's buying and selling rates rose from the overnight closing of Rs 199.20 and Rs 200.00 to Rs 199.75 and Rs 200.80 respectively, they added.

RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The dollar gained 15 paisas against the rupee on the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi here on Thursday.

The dollar opened at Rs 154.75 (buying) and Rs 154.85 (selling) against last rate of Rs 154.60 (buying) and Rs 154.70 (selling).

It closed at Rs 154.75 (buying) and Rs 154.85 (selling).

The buying and selling rates of one tola of gold were Rs 91,500 (selling) and Rs 91,200 (buying) in the local Sarafa (gold) markets of twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
