Federal Minister for Communications Murad Saeed Friday said that National Highways Authority (NHA) would achieve the target of Rs 100 billion revenue generations in next five years which stands at Rs 35 billion for the current financial year.

This he stated while addressing a seminar on "Role of public institutions in nation building and development" held here at National Highway Authority headquarters.

The NHA for the current year has set the target of generating Rs 35 billion revenue which would be doubled and hopefully the institution is likely to generate revenue of Rs 55 billion till the month of June this year, he claimed.

Saeed said that public institutions play vital role in nation building and development. Struggle with vision ahead brings about positive results, said the minister, adding that process of reforms being introduced in public institutions will continue.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister Iftikhar Durrani, Federal Secretary Communications Jawwad Rafique Malik and Chairman National Highway Authority (NHA) Capt Sikandar Qayyum (retd) also addressed on the occasion. Professor Khalid Javed highlighted the role of government departments in national development through presentation.

Saeed said in order to achieve the set target in public departments, posting of able and sincere people is indispensable. Attempts to run public institutions through favoured individuals cause damage to the departments. After coming into power, he said, the government achieved first 100 days targets successfully. Later, targets set for one year were also achieved.

He further said, "We are committed to enhance the revenue of NHA to Rs 100 billion through hardworking and dedication. The NHA is undertaking steps to generate more financial resources. The NHA will construct roads through its own revenue and we will do it." He claimed that the country's institutions are passing through process of self-accountability and transparency.

The minister said the NHA had recovered Rs 10 billion, adding the NHA had also prepared its business plan that would further be expanded and implemented. He said the Western Route of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) had now been realized. He also talked about Ehsaas Programme, Sehat Insaf Card, Shelter Homes and Kamyab Nojawan Programs initiated by Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan. He said Pakistan's image on international level is improving gradually and resultantly investment is coming in the country. The country had been taken on the track to development and this process would continue, he added.

Iftikhar Durrani said Prime Minister Imran Khan had given the vision of justice and equality and steps are underway to achieve the objectives.

The secretary communications addressing on the occasion said the NHA was considered a difficult department but due to clear vision, devotion and guidance, the targets are achieved satisfactory. He said sincere efforts and hard labour put in by the officers and workers of some institution prepare the ground to achieve the goals.

Capt Sikandar Qayyum (retd) said that strong institutions ensure nation building and development. In order to make institutions strong, constant implementation of policies was direly needed, he added.
