India's Deputy High Commissioner meets Kulbhushan Jadhav in Islamabad

As per the directives of International Court of Justice (ICJ), Pakistan granted on Monday consular access to Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav.

On Monday, India accepted Pakistan's offer to grant access to Jadhav. According to reports, India's Deputy High Commissioner to Pakistan, Gaurav Ahluwalia, reached the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and held a meeting with Foreign Office Spokesperson Mohammad Faisal. The meeting between Jadhav and Ahluwalia is currently underway.

On Sunday, the spokesperson had announced in a tweet that Pakistan will provide consular access to the Indian spy on Monday (today). "Consular access for Indian spy Commander Kulbhushan Jadhav, a serving Indian naval officer and RAW operative, is being provided on Monday 2 September 2019, in line with Vienna Convention on Consular relations, ICJ judgement and the laws of Pakistan," the spokesperson wrote on Twitter.

Pakistan’s legal team reaches The Hague for ICJ’s Kulbhushan Jadhav verdict tomorrow

On March 3, 2016 Jadhav was arrested from Balochistan on allegations of espionage and terrorism. In 2017, the spy was sentenced to death. The same year Jadhav filed a mercy petition against the death penalty. Following India’s appeal, the ICJ ordered a stay in Jadhav’s execution.

This year in July, the ICJ rejected India’s appeal to annul the military court decision convicting Jadhav. The court also restricted Pakistan from executing the sentence and ordered Jadhav’s return to India.

The ICJ had also directed Pakistan to inform Jadhav of his rights under Article 36 and grant India consular access. The court had also ruled that Pakistan should review the case while considering its laws.
