KARACHI: Workers along with political activists here on Wednesday actively commemorated the 133rd World Labour Day honoring the victims of factory workers killed in 1871, during an inferno, known as Great Chicago Fire.
City administration had ensured strict security arrangements for the protection of workers as well as citizens in general attending series of public meetings and rallies organized by different political parties and labour organizations.
Different labor organizations including National Workers federation and Sindh Women Workers Association were joined in by Joint Action Committee of Concerned Citizens along with different small organization in their respective rallies that culminated at Karachi Press Club.
The women workers rally "Mehnatkash Aurat Rally" led by Saba Edhi and participated by women workers pertaining to both formal and informal sectors sought raise in their daily wages and also demanded proper implementation of series of pro-workers' law introduced in the province.
Rafiq Baloch, Nasir Mansoor, Gul Rehman, Riaz Abbasi and others addressing the rally taken out by the National Trade Union Federation (NTUF - Pakistan) said workers in the country must be allowed to form union at their respective work places.
This, they said was crucial for protection of their rights and also to help them get better organized with equal attention towards their capacity building.
Better skilled workers will meet the standard required in our factories and mills undergoing technological modifications, they said.
Rafiq Baloch, the NTUF president said formation of union was also a prerequisite for registration of concerned workers with social security institutions.
"This was equally important for their accessibility to pension funds," said Baloch.
The rally was also addressed by Saida Khatoon, President, Baldia Town Garment Factory Affected Families Association.
