ISLAMABAD: National Assembly on Tuesday passed resolutions calling for imposition of regulatory duty on the import of cotton and fixing of support price for the crop to encourage local growers.
The resolution was tabled by MNA Riaz Fatyana after the Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri suspended discussion on the orders of the day.
In another resolution on occasion of Labor Day, the house expressed its determination to protect rights of labourers.
While taking up bills of the members, the house rejected the bill of MNA Mehnaz Akber Aziz to make provisions for prohibition of corporal punishment against children in capital territory.
Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari told the house that the government would introduce a similar bill to the house soon.
The house also rejected the bill moved by Mohsin Dawar to further amend the Pakistan Penal Code, 1860 and the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898. The amendment was related to the issue of missing persons.
The bill of Riaz Fatyana to amend the Pakistan Citizenship Act, 1951 was referred to the committee.
The bill of Kishwer Zehra and other MNAs on bringing amendment in the Pakistan Penal Code, 1860 and the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898 for increasing punishment for bouncing of cheques was also sent to the relevant committee.
The house rejected to grant leave to Shahida Rehmani to introduce the bill to amend the Provincial Motor Vehicles Ordinance, 1965 for reducing the driving age from 18 to 16 years.
Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad told the house that the Ministry of Interior opposed the bill on the grounds that reducing the age for driving would cause more road accidents.
The house referred to the committee the bill of Dr Darshan and other MNAs about bringing amendment in the constitution to increase seats of minorities in the National Assembly.
Parliamentary Secretary Malaika Bukhari told the house that a similar amendment was before the Committee for Law and Justice for consideration.
The government ministers opposed the bills related to amendment in Naturalization Act, 1926 and on provision for rehabilitation and welfare of the unattended orphan children in the Islamabad capital territory.
Minister Shireen Mazari opposed the bill on unattended children saying a law was already passed on the issue and now the need was to implement it.
