The four-day 17th annual National Engineering Robotics Contest (NERC) 2019, the biggest robotics contest in the country, concluded at NUST College of Electrical & Mechanical Engineering (E&ME) Rawalpindi on Saturday. National University of Sciences and Technology, STEM Careers Programme, Higher Education Commission (HEC) and National Centre of Robotics and Automation organised the 17th annual NERC 2019.
The last two decades have seen tremendous activity in the field of robotics. Robot clubs have sprung up everywhere in the world and thousands of web pages are devoted to robots. A large number of robotic contests are held annually throughout the world.
The four days event had seven categories. The prize money of these categories were sponsored by NUST, STEM Careers Programme HEC, Head Start School, NEXUS Technologies, Alfroze Pvt Ltd, Grana, NUST Alumni, EME Centre of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ICE), Intech Automation, and IEEE young professionals. This is the pioneering and biggest robotics contest in the country which attracts participants from all over the country.
Dr Muhammad Amjad Saqib, Founder of Akhuwat Foundation was the chief guest of the event. Saqib while complimenting the efforts taken up so vigorously by NUST College of E&ME, called "National Engineering Robotics Contest" a platform that provides the engineering students of Pakistan with an opportunity to get the complete engineering experience.
Brigadier Tariq Javed SI (M), Sitara-e-Eisaar Commandant College of E&ME, highlighted how the number of participants had grown over the years and the standard of the competition has risen.
He said, "We believe that healthy competitions like NERC are beacons of a progressive attitude. In a knowledge-based economy, towards which the world is heading, creativity and innovation have become essential weapons in the intellectual armory of students."
Brigadier Dr Javaid Iqbal, the Dean of Academics stressed that co- and extra-curricular activities play a very important role in building a sound personality and a successful human being. He emphasised on the participants that all competitions of human activities are focused for improvements and winning/losing is a by-product. "This is how we will grow as a nation," he said.
Dr Umar Shahbaz Khan, the chief organiser of the contest, informed that teams from different universities, colleges and institutes from all over the country participated. Such contests not only increase the awareness regarding robotics and mechatronics but also show that we as a nation are progressing towards these technologically advanced fields.
At the end of the ceremony the chief guest gave away the prizes to the winning teams of NERC 2019 in the following categories.
a) Winner NERC 2019 Shield with cash prize of Rs 100,000 was awarded to team Markhor from NUST College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.
b) 1st Runner-up NERC 2019 Shield with cash prize of Rs 70,000 was awarded to team Ghori from NUST College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.
c) 2nd Runner-up NERC 2019 Shield with cash prize of Rs 50,000 was awarded to team Gears from Lahore Garrison University.
d) 3 x Best Engineering Design Award with cash prize of Rs 15,000 each was awarded to Decepticon team from NUST College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Suicide Squad from UET Taxila, and Khal Drogo from Lahore University of Management Sciences.
e) Winner NERC 2019 Modular Category (Universities) with cash prize of Rs 25,000 was awarded to team JF 17 Thunder from Lahore Garrison University.
f) 1st Runner-up NERC 2019 Modular Category (Universities) with cash prize of Rs 15,000 was awarded to team King Robo from University of Balochistan.
g) Winner NERC 2019 Modular Category (Schools) with cash prize of Rs 25,000 was awarded to team Biryani Bots from Roots Millennium School.
h) 1st Runner up NERC 2019 Modular Category (Schools) with cash prize of Rs 15,000 was awarded to team Botistotles from EMS High School.
i) Winner NERC 2019 Ready to Move Robo Race School Category with cash prize of Rs 15,000 was awarded to team Star Screen-LGSIT from Lahore Grammar School.
j) Winner NERC 2019 Ready to Move Robo Race University Category with cash prize of Rs 15,000 was awarded to team Robo Nerds from PAF Karachi Institute of Economics and Technology.
k) Winner NERC 2019 Robo Wars with cash prize of Rs 25,000 was awarded to team Lucifer from Institute of Space Technology Islamabad.
l) 1st Runner-up NERC 2019 Robo Wars with cash prize of Rs 15,000 was awarded to team Wrecker from Dawood University Karachi.
m) Winner NERC 2019 Sumowars with cash prize of Rs 15,000 was awarded to team Revolutioners from Dawood University Karachi.
n) Winner NERC 2019 Aero - Contest of Drones (Category-I) with cash prize of Rs 20,000 was awarded to team Griffins from Bahria University Karachi.
o) Winner NERC 2019 Aero - Contest of Drones (Category-II) with cash prize of Rs 20,000 was awarded to team Pacifier from LUMS.
p) Winner NERC 2019 Aero - RC Build and Fly with cash prize of Rs 15,000 was awarded to team Hornet from PAF Karachi Institute of Economics and Technology.
q) 3 x EME Encouragement Awards of Rs 10,000 each were awarded to Team SBBU-I from Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University Karachi, Team Xarb from APS College of E&ME and Team Teachnobrate from Head Start School.
r) EME Award was given for maximum participation of 15 teams from PAF Karachi Institute of Economics and Technology.
