A meeting of the federal cabinet convened today (Tuesday) may consider proposed tax amnesty scheme, although it has not been included in the agenda of the meeting. On Sunday last, Advisor to Prime Minister on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh chaired a meeting on the proposed tax amnesty scheme and directed Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to fine-tune the scheme to make it simple to understand and easy to implement. Sources said that as the government wants to introduce the asset declaration scheme as early as possible, the meeting on the subject was convened on Sunday last so that FBR could make necessary changes in the original scheme with a possibility to seek approval from today''s cabinet meeting.
The 16-point agenda of the meeting included approval for signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between China International Development Cooperation Agency and Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform, Pakistan, on implementation of the projects under Joint Working Group of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) on Socio-Economic Development. Another agenda item included recommendations of the committee of the cabinet, headed by the minister for defence, on compilation of statistics on price hike.
The meeting will be requested for ratification of the decisions taken by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet in its meeting held on 08-04-2019 as well as ratification of the decision taken by the Cabinet Committee on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Division (CPEC) in its meeting held on 13-03-2019.
The federal cabinet will consider a proposal for deputation of an officer against the post of member (revenue), National Highways Authority, and tax exemption in respect of projects funded by Saudi Fund for Development Grant for Earthquake Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Authority (ERRA).
A presentation will also be given to the federal cabinet to revamp the existing education system of the country by Federal Education and Professional Training Division. A summary regarding procedural delays and loopholes in clemency appeals will also be examined, while Law and Justice Division will put up a proposal for appointment of judicial members of Appellate Tribunal Inland Revenue.
The meeting will also take up a proposal for approval of the Drought Response Plan-2019 of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and cases of former members of Board of Governors of Overseas Pakistanis Foundation Management as well as transfer of National Endowment Scholarship for Talent Planning (Nest) from Ministry of Planning, Development & Development & Reform.
The cabinet will also consider a proposal of Planning Division with regard to giving additional charge of the post of chief statistician of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The cabinet will be submitted a report on implementation of cabinet decision regarding utilisation of trains by government departments by Railways Division, and signing of the MoU for the membership of the Belt and Road Initiative tax administration cooperation mechanism by the Revenue Division.
