Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday directed his newly appointed Adviser on Finance and Economic Affairs Dr Abdul Hafiz Sheikh to chalk out policies that are aligned with the government's vision and priorities. The sources within the government told Business Recorder that the Prime Minister categorically told the newly appointed cabinet members, especially the finance team, that he "means business and anybody who fails to come up to his expectation will be shown the door."
The lady luck smiled on Chief Ministers of Punjab Usman Buzdar and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mehmood Khan, as the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction on their performance and termed them 'quite decent and hardworking.' The sources quoted the Prime Minister as saying that he has full confidence in both the chief ministers. He also directed all the ministers to extend full support to the duo in materialising the government's efforts to give relief to the masses.
The Premier lamented the former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, saying he gave nothing but an economic crisis to the country when PML-N was in power, adding the then government did not remove him which further derailed the economy.
"Now we have brought Hafeez Sheikh [as new adviser on finance] who has sound knowledge of the country's economy and global financial affairs...I'm sure he will do his level best to steer the country out of prevailing economic crisis," the PM was quoted as saying.
They said that the PM Khan lamented a 300 per cent hike in prices of medicines, saying that he wanted to bring a revolution in health and education sectors, which is why the ministry is taken away from Amir Kayani as he failed to deliver. They said the Prime Minister also introduced his newly-appointed Adviser on Health Zafarullah Mirza to the participants of the meeting. "Zafarullah Mirza is an experienced individual and I hope he would come up to our good expectations," he added.
Talking to media after the meeting, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said that new finance and economic teams have been instructed to devise policies that are "aligned with the Prime Minister's vision and priorities." She said that the Prime Minister has given special targets to the newly appointed advisor on economic affairs how to steer the country out of the prevailing economic crisis, which is need of the hour.
Awan, in her first media talk since her recent appointment, said that the new economic team headed by Dr Abdul Hafiz Sheikh has been given responsibilities and targets. "The [economic] targets have clearly been defined how we can steer the country out of these prevailing [economic] crisis confronting the country," she added. She said that the Prime Minister will be in Quetta today (Sunday) to inaugurate a housing scheme and condole with Hazara families and offer his condolences over last week's Hazarganji suicide attack.
She also announced that Minister for Power Omar Ayub Khan is being given the additional charge of the minister of petroleum - a position held by Ghulam Sarwar Khan until the recent cabinet reshuffle. She said that the Prime Minister is also leaving for Iran on a two-day official on Sunday (today) before his trip to China which is scheduled for April 25.
She said that "a harmony is being created to bridge the disconnect between the people's expectations and the government's decisions, if there is any," adding that "this is number one on the Prime Minister's agenda now."
Awan said that various ministries have been given a variety of targets to provide relief to the masses, especially in Ramazan, adding that different departments have been directed to ensure there should be no load shedding. To a question about Asad Umar, the former finance minister, she said that there is no need to woo him, he is the man of Khan's team and he will be back soon.
Awan urged the opposition parties to play their due role and support the government in ridding the problems facing the people of Pakistan but warned if they construe the government's oft-repeated desire for reconciliation as a sign of weakness then that would spawn problems. "The opposition should also play their role with responsibility and our reconciliation policy must not be construed as a weakness...we'll not allow anybody to hijack the Parliament," she added.
The ministers whose portfolios were changed as part of the cabinet reshuffle, including former information minister Fawad Chaudhry, did not attend the meeting in Banigala. When asked if Chaudhry's and others' absence is a sign of their unhappiness, she clarified that this was not a cabinet meeting but rather a spokespersons' meeting.
"Fawad Chaudhry is a member of the spokespersons' committee but he had informed in advance that he was not in Islamabad and was travelling to Lahore. He will be a part of the next meeting," she said. Awan said that the media industry's concerns regarding the crisis it is facing are "valid," adding, "We're going to engage media rather than confronting it."
"When we go into the engagement strategy, there will be consultation. We will hear some, we will say some and then there will be a win-win situation where well-being of media will be our top priority," she said.
Earlier, Minister for Railways Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed said that no minister was removed except Federal Minister for Health Aamer Mehmood Kayani, after he failed to control the drug price hike. About resignation of Asad Umar and his refusal to accept any other cabinet position, he said that he would soon be part of the cabinet.
"He [Umar] is not angry at all, as he is a brilliant man. I myself will go to him soon and request him to be part of the cabinet, and you will see him holding an important cabinet portfolio as he's an asset for the party," he declared.
