The Supreme Court on Tuesday stated that luxury vehicles, worth billions of rupees, owned by the government departments were disappeared after the court took a suo motu of the matter. Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar directed the additional attorney general (AAG) to find out who gave orders to hide these vehicles, and submit a report in this regard.
He was heading a three-member Supreme Court bench, also comprising Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijazul Ahsan, which was hearing a suo motu case pertaining to misuse of government-owned luxury vehicles. During the hearing, the Chief Justice noted that luxury vehicles owned by various government departments were hidden after the Supreme Court sought their details. He said he had received information that about 27 such vehicles were parked in the basement of 7-C Building on MM Alam Road, Lahore. He said the Supreme Court's additional registrar went there to check that building but some people deputed there did not allow the official to inspect vehicles.
He said the vehicles were hidden after the apex court had sought their record. He said the departments that had reportedly hidden their vehicles belong to the Punjab government. Later, the court adjourned the hearing for an indefinite period. Earlier on April 14, the Supreme Court had directed the cabinet secretaries of the federal and the provincial governments to submit a record of all the officers and ministers who are using luxury vehicles, which are beyond their official entitlement.
Besides, registrars of all the high courts were also directed to submit within fortnight the record of the chief justices who are using a vehicle beyond their official entitlement.
