One killed in violence: protest over six-year-old Rabia's rape and killing
One protester was killed after protest turned violent against alleged rape and murder of a 6-year-old-girl form her relatives and neighbours in Manghopir neighbourhood, here on Tuesday. Abdul Rehman, one of the protesters demanding rapid justice to the bereaved family of the minor girl, died because of gunshot whereas several others including the policemen sustained injuries as the protesters scuffled with the law enforcers near Kati Paharhi where they hurled stones at riot police.
Rabia, a resident of Baloch Goth, Orangi Town, had gone missing on Sunday; however, she was found dead in bushes in Manghopir on Monday night. Police said her post-mortem report suggested the girl had been sexually assaulted before being killed. Earlier, the protesters carrying the victim's body blocked the road leading to Kati Paharhi and demanded authorities to take notice and ensure immediate arrests of the elements involvement in the brutal assault.
As the demonstration turned violent, police fired in the air to disperse the crowd. They also resorted to baton-charge. Two protesters suffered bullet injuries and were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH), where one could not survive and died. Police said 10 to 15 police officials were also injured during the violence.
Manghopir police station's Duty Officer (DO) Ijaz told the media that victim's father visited the police station at 9 pm on Monday regarding his daughter's disappearance. "In his statement, the father told us the victim left her house at around 2:00pm on Monday," said the DO, adding a call about a child's body was received at 12:40 am night of Tuesday. The area SHO, Haji Sanaullah, said the MLO's report confirmed that minor was strangled to death.
