Muhammad Maroof won first gold medal for Punjab University on the opening day of the All-Pakistan Inter-University Men Athletic Championship which got under way here at Qayyum Sports Complex on Thursday. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister Sports, Tourism, Youth Affairs and Archive Mehmood Khan was chief guest on the occasion.
Vice Chancellor University of Peshawar Professor Dr Muhammad Asif Khan, former World Champion of Squash Qamar Zaman, Director General Sports and former International athlete Bahre Karam, former SAF Games bronze medalist Muhammad Shah, former international Technical Official Muhammad Sami Marwat, players, officials and large number spectators were also present. The ceremony was started with the recitation from the Holy Quran by Shahab Khan, followed by National Anthem presented by Police Band. The most thrilling was the smart March Past of all the 29 contingents participated from as many Universities all across the country.
National Junior 200m gold medalist athlete Nouman Khan of University of Peshawar took the oath on behalf of the all the participating athletes. On the opening day there was a tough battle for the gold medal between Muhammad Maroof of Punjab University and Shahbaz of University of Central Punjab and Safdar of University of Central Punjab in the 5000m race.
Muhammad Maroof finished the race of 5000m with his clock time 16.18.44sec, followed by Shahbaz of University of Central Punjab with a slight 2 seconds different with his clock time 16.20.10sec got silver medal and Safdar of the same took bronze medal with his time 16.24.07sec.
In the shot put final Rana Antash, a national junior medalist, secured gold medal when he threw the shot put at 13.86m, followed by Huzran Khan of Punjab University with a distance of 13.09m and Khalid Ahmed of University of Peshawar with his distance of 13.07m. Munsif Khan of University of Peshawar took fourth position with his 12.75m distance, Usama got fifth position with his 12.88m and Nouman of University of Science and Technology and Information Bannu took sixth position with his distance of 12.75m.
In the 800m final Umer Ahmad of Punjab University won gold medal with his clock time 1.56.72sec, followed by Asat Ullah of Punjab University with his time 1.57.03sec and Adnan Khan of Sarhad University of Science and Technology with his clock time 1.58.75sec.
In the 400m hurdles a total of eight players qualified from the 8 heats. Fida Hussain of University of Peshawar, Farhan Ilyas of University of Central Punjab, Mohsin of Punjab University, Umer Zaib of University of Peshawar, Usama Bashir of University of Central Punjab, Amjad of Punjab University, Adnan Khan of Sarhad University of Information Technology and Muhammad Zubair Ashraf of Govt College University Faisalabad qualified for the final. Directorate of Sports University of Peshawar is organizing the Championship in which a total of 29 universities teams taking part in three-day event.
