Directorate of Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Friday distributed cash incentives of Rs 2.47 million among medals winners of various games part of the recently concluded 2nd Quaid-e-Azam Games played in Islamabad. The Director General (DG) Sports Junaid Khan, who was also the Chef de Mission of 350-plus KP contingent, was the chief guest on this occasion.
Former World Champion, Qamar Zaman, Director Operation Syed Saqlain Shah, Director Female Games Miss Rashida Ghaznavi, Presidents and Secretaries of various associations, officials, District Sports Officer of various districts, players and large number of spectators were also present. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had clinched 3rd position overall in the Quaid-e-Azam Games by winning 21 gold, 24 silver and 51 bronze medals. The game of squash of both female and male made a clean sweep while Judo female won five gold medals, two silver medals and three bronze medals.
The most fascinating final of hockey won by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa hockey team against Sindh by winning the final on penalty shoot-out and Roman Khan of KP was also declared as the best goal-keeper by saving all the penalty shoot-out. Laiba Ijaz, a national junior squash ranking player, was the only female of the Quaid-e-Azam Games who won double gold medals and got the honor of receiving the overall 3rd position trophy from the Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahid Khakan Abbasi.
In the female squash KP won both female and male gold medals and silver medals in the individual categories besides gold medal in female and male team events. In the female event Khyber Pakhtunkhwa won eight gold medal, eight silver medal and 15 bronze medals and a total of Rs 714,000/ cash was distributed in the games of squash, badminton, tennis, table tennis, taekwondo, karate, netball, and judo. In the male discipline of the Quaid-e-Azam Games Khyber Pakhtunkhwa won a total of 13 gold medals, 16 silver medals and 36 bronze medals and among them Rs 1,759,000/- distributed between the players of squash, badminton, tennis, table tennis, karate, athletics, netball, taekwondo, judo, kabaddi, boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, snooker, wushu, volleyball, baseball and hockey.
Speaking on the occasion, DG Sports Junaid Khan assured the players that the govt is very keen to facilitate them in all games. He also announced provision of badminton and martial arts mates and indoor gymnasium for district Lakki Marwat and swat districts. He said the Directorate of Sports KP is purchasing sports gears worth Rs 50 million with the aim to provide conducive environment to the talented players in all districts across KP.
He said the third edition of the Under-23 Games will be starting from next month after completion of unveiling ceremonies of the Under-23 Games at District Level in the first phase and in the second more than 11500 athletes would take part in 17 female and 25 male disciplines.
He said sports scholarship of Rs 48000 each will be given to the medal winners of Under-23 Games 2016 and 2017 and advised the players to keep on their hardworking for winning more medals in the 3rd edition. Earlier, he distributed cash prizes among the medal winners of Quaid-e-Azam Games.
