The Higher Education Commission has banned four universities from admitting students in any degree programme due to academic irregularities and mismanagement, a spokesperson of the HEC said on Wednesday. They include Karachi's Preston Institute of Management Sciences and Technology, Lahore's Imperial College of Business Studies and Global Institute, and Al-Khair University of Azad Kashmir.
Also disallowed to admit students, at any level and in any programmes, are these institutions' sub-campuses, branches and affiliated colleges. Complying with a prime ministerial directive, HEC review panels visited universities in 2016 across the country for quality assurance. Universities whose reports were unsatisfactory have still not complied with the directives despite government reminders, which is why they have been asked to cease admitting students in any of their academic programmes.
The HEC regularly issues parent and student alerts in national and regional newspapers and through television and radio, asking the public to visit the HEC website for a list of recognized institutions and accredited programmes. It also warns students that the HEC will not attest degrees and certificates issued by such universities and institutes. The lists can be accessed through hec.gov.pk/site/HEIs.
The HEC website also has a list of Accreditation Councils responsible for accreditation of degree programmes. These include the Pakistan Bar Council, the Pakistan Council for Architects and Town Planners, the Pakistan Engineering Council, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, the Pakistan Nursing Council, the Pakistan Pharmacy Council, the Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council, the National Council for Homoeopathy, the National Council for Tibb, the National Accreditation Council for Teachers Education, the National Agricultural Education Accreditation Council, the National Computing Education Accreditation Council, and the National Business Education Accreditation Council.
