Sindh's minister of livestock and fisheries, Muhammad Ali Malkani, said on Thursday that the hosting of a large number of cattle traders from all over Pakistan highlights the economic importance of Karachi, and this is an honour for Sindh and this city.
Inaugurating Asia's biggest cattle market at Sohrab Goth, he said that the Sindh government and the city government are helping the mandi's administration to facilitate traders and buyers.
He said that a team of 12 veterinary doctors and paramedics appointed by the provincial livestock and animal husbandry department is working round the clock in the cattle market to facilitate traders in treatment of their animals.
The president of the Malir Cantonment Board, Brig Wasim Bhatti, said: "It was a difficult task to organize a huge area into a well equipped market so soon, but with all help from the city administration and the provincial government, the mandi management was able to achieve all the goals set for this year."
The administrator of the cattle market, Syed Irshad Ahmed, said that this year's Maweshi Mandi occupies an area of 800 acres. Premium quality drinking water of a renowned brand is available at affordable prices inside the market.
There are lighting arrangements inside the blocks, and 16 litres of water are provided to each animal every day and the animals are provided free to facilitate buyers and sellers, and free parking facilities are being provided to visitors, he added.
