Suhail Ahmed, a renowned debater and a student of PU Law College, was brutally tortured by Islami Jammiat Tulaba (IJT) activists for tweeting in support of missing Professor Salman Hiader.
In the wake of policy 'deal' of new vice chancellor Dr Zafar Mueen with IJT, the university administration and its security guards did not take any action against the IJT activists, who also took the student in illegal detention for about three hours.
According to details, a national level distinguished debater Suhail Ahmed, who is the student of 8th semester PU Law College, and resides in hostel number 1 room no. 233, tweeted in support of Islamabad based missing Professor Salman Haider. He shared a poem of Faiz Ahmed Faiz to express solidarity with the missing professor.
Infuriated by his tweet, some 14 activists of IJT on Monday at 8:33 pm reached his hostel room in hostel no.1 and forcibly shifted him to another room 139, which was famous for being a torture cell in the past. Suhail Ahmed said they put him on the ground, covered him with a blanket and started kicking him all over.
It is important to note, after recent policy deal of new VC with IJT, the student wing of the political party have managed to re-establish their office in room no. 244 on hostel no. 1.
Suhail Ahmed while talking to media said that when IJT activists started beating him, a number of students gathered there and some security guards also reached outside their room. However, IJT activists in the presence of guards tortured him and took him away to some unknown place outside the university. "I was crying for help but not a single guard tried to rescue me." he said. He also said after 3 hours of partial abduction, torture and harassment IJT activists released him and he somehow managed to reach his room in hostel.
Suhail said he informed Vice Chancellor Dr Zafar Mueen Nasar that a group of IJT activists along with former nazim Amir Hamza attacked him, tortured him besides held him hostage for three hours. He said VC started questioning him, how he knew they belonged to IJT. He further said those who attacked him might belong to some other group as IJT had given him word that they would remain peaceful. Later, due to media pressure Muslim Town police registered FIR of the case.
Punjab University spokesman has said that on the directions of Vice Chancellor Dr Zafar Mueen Nasir, the administration forwarded request regarding torture on Sohail Ahmed, student of University Law College for registration of FIR and police have also registered the case. He said that after the incident, the Vice Chancellor visited hostel no 1.
The spokesman said that it was a false impression that Jamiat had been given free hand. He said that PU administration will not compromise on law and order situation on campus.
He said that the administration would take stern action against the elements who were involved the incident as per rules and regulations.
