This is apropos a Business Recorder news item 'Five UAE officials among 57 killed in Afghan bombings' carried by the newspaper yesterday. According to it, five UAE officials were among 57 people killed in a string of bombings across Afghan cities as Taliban militants step up a deadly winter campaign of violence. The Emiratis were among 12 people killed when explosives hidden in a sofa detonated inside the governor's compound in southern Kandahar on Tuesday, while the UAE's ambassador to Afghanistan escaped the attack with injuries.
The situation in Afghanistan is profound, indeed. The country is in throes of violence for several decades. The US action of toppling Taliban has added a new dimension to the spectre of deaths and destruction in this landlocked country. An inept Ashraf Ghani-led government has proved to be the part of problem. Under his government, not only have Taliban strengthened themselves, Daesh is also increasing its area of influence in this war-ravaged country. The world, particularly the US and the Gulf sheikhdoms, are required to examine the situation with a view to bringing stability, however modest, in this country.
