Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has initiated as many as 25 new development schemes worth Rs 497.3 million in the metropolis. Mayor Karachi, Waseem Akhtar informed this during a press conference here at KMC building on Monday. Reiterating his demand, Waseem urged Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to announce a development package for Karachi to uplift the lifestyle of citizens.
The uplift schemes are initially being executed in 4 Districts; Central, West, South and East out of the total 6 districts in the metropolis. The Chairmen and other concerned officials of District Municipal Corporations (DMCs) are supervising the ongoing projects of their respective constituencies, he told.
Of the total Rs 497.3 million, some Rs 178 million is being spent for 9 development projects in District Central, MQM dominant constituency mainly consisting areas of Nazimabad and North Nazimabad. Rs 19.9 million are being spent to repair roads and patch working around Kaka Ground, North Nazimabad Block-N. The work would be completed within 2 months since its launch.
Rs 119 million are being utilised in District South's 6 projects. Similarly Rs 138 million are being spent against 7 schemes in District East. Likewise, Rs 59.6 million are being utilized in District West's 3 schemes. Major schemes are related to streets/road repair and pavement of sewerage lines etc.
Waseem said the civic body, despite monetary constrains, was making best efforts to resolve problems ranging from removal of heaps of garbage to provision of clean drinking water, and from education to healthcare. The Mayor said the city's population is increasing rapidly, but resources are far less to cope with the challenges. He said that the civic body has launched a 100-day 'City Clean Campaign' from December 1, 2016. Political parties and people from different walks of life are participating in this campaign.
"Improvement is visible now in some areas where KMC teams are working on road carpeting, garbage removal and maintenance of schools, parks and hospitals," he said. Since the first day in office as Mayor, Waseem said that he has visited various areas of the metropolis to listen the problems of citizens. Besides, he reviewed development activities being launched as part of 100-day city clean campaign in the selected constituencies.
Waseem was released on September 16 from the central prison after the Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) granted him a bail in a case pertaining to providing terrorists with a medical help. He was jailed on July 19 this year for a number of criminal cases including his alleged involvement in May 12, 2007 violence in the city, and facilitating a hate speeches.
