ISLAMABAD: The Federal Government has decided to extend the Pakistan Essential Services (Maintenance) Act, 1952 to all classes of employment under Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) for a period of six months with effect from September 27, 2020 aimed at barring the employees from taking any kind of strike action, well-informed sources told Business Recorder.

According to Secretary Interior, Ministry of Energy, Petroleum Division (Policy Wing), Directorate General of Petroleum Concessions has requested for extension in application of the Pakistan Essential Services (Maintenance) Act, 1952 to all classes of employment under Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) for a further period of six months from September 27, 2020.

The Pakistan Petroleum Limited is a public limited company incorporated under the Companies Ordinance, 1984 and is engaged in the exploration and production of oil and gas in Pakistan. PPL is supplying oil and gas to different entities for onward supply and consumption by public at large.

A summary was moved to Cabinet Division for approval of Cabinet regarding application of the Pakistan Essential Services (Maintenance) Act, 1952 to all classes of employment under Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) for a further period of six months, under Section-3 of the Act.

The Cabinet in its meeting held on March 27, 2020 accorded approval and accordingly a notification was issued for a period of six months with effect from March 27, 2020 which expired on September 26, 2020.

In order to ensure uninterrupted operation of the organization, Petroleum Division has recommended application of the Pakistan Essentfal Services (Maintenance) Act, 1952 to all classes of employment under Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) for a further period of six months with effect from September 27, 2020, under Section-3 of the said Act.

The Ministry of Interior has sought Cabinet's approval for extension in application of the Pakistan Essential Services (Maintenance) Act, 1952 to all classes of employment under PPL for a period of six month with effect from September 27, 2020.
