The inefficiency of police and the deteriorating law and order situation in the country have badly affected the trade and other business activities. This was stated by the President, the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI), Sultan Ahmed Chawla.
While addressing a press conference held here at the Federation House on Wednesday to condemn the brutal killing of Mian Najeeb Zafar, owner of Eastern Leather, occurred few days ago in Sheikhupura. He said that this unfortunate incident, which took place as a result of negligence and inefficiency of the area police, has not only created the sense of insecurity among the businessmen, but also damaged the country's image internationally.
Chawla said that the Imam of the Mosque in the area, who issued the fatwa to kill the innocent trader without any investigation, was also equally responsible for the sad incident. Though the police had been informed, at least five hours, before the incident, they had not taken any steps to save the precious life, he added.
Demanding to bring all the involved persons into justice, Khalid Iqbal, the uncle of the slain trader, said that a conspiracy was behind the move to discourage the economic activities in the country. S M Munir, another speaker, said that the Imam, who had passed the fatwa of 'Wajibul Qatil,' had still not been arrested by the police. Condemning the negative role of such Imams, Senator Abdul Hasseb Khan suggested that the government should ask the imams of the mosques not to make controversial speeches and condemn this act of Imam of the mosque of the area.
Zakaria Usman, Vice President, FPCCI, while suggesting for implementing a balanced labour policy, condemned the murder of his fellow trader in Sheikarpur. In order to stop the same incident in the coming future, Dr Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Textile, suggested that the government should stop misinterpreting blasphemy laws and make required changes. Gulzar Feroz, Member Managing Committee, FPCCI, and Saood from All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) also condemned the incident during their speeches.
