Renowned religious scholar and second Amir of Jamaat-i-Islami Pakistan, Mian Tufail Muhammad passed away here Thursday evening. He was 96. His Namaz-e-Janaza will be offered at 4pm on Friday (today). Born in Kapurthala in Indian Punjab in 1913, Tufail Muhammad was one of the close lieutenants of Syed Abul Aala Maudoodi, the founding Amir of Jamaat.
Mian Tufail who suffered brain haemorrhage about one month ago, remained in coma till his last breath. He left four sons and eight daughters behind him. Mian Tufail Mohammad obtained his graduation (B.A. Hons) in Physics and Mathematics from Government College, Lahore, in 1935 and did LL.B. from the Punjab University Law College in 1937. Tufail Muhammad was one of the closest fellows of Syed Abul Aala Maudoodi and Maulana Amin Ahsan Islahi and also one of the founder members of Jamaat-i-Islami.
He had started his career as a lawyer and worked as an assistant to Justice Mohammad Sharif in 1938 in Jalandhar but returned to Kapurthala State in 1939. Mian Tufail got married in 1942 and Allah Almighty blessed him with four sons and eight daughters. Mian Tufail Muhammad was one of 75 founding members of JI when it was formed in 1941.
He was appointed as the first Secretary General (Qayyum) of the party during first All India JI Conference in 1944 after that he abandoned his business in Lahore and moved to Pathankot. Tufail worked as JI Secretary General till 1965 and was elected Ameer of JI West Pakistan in January 1966 to 1972.
After the resignation of Sayed Maudoodi as Ameer in October 1972, Mian Tufail was elected as Ameer for five years and he again was elected for two more terms till 1987 when Qazi Hussain Ahmad was elected JI Chief. He remained in Kasur and Multan jails from October 4,1948 to May 28, 1950 for leading the Tehrik-e-Nizam-e-Islami, in Lahore District Jail and Sahiwal Jail from October 10,1961 to June 23 1962 for criticising the Family Laws ordinance of Ayub Khan.
On May 6,1963, he was put in the Lahore Jail alongwith eight other political parties' leaders on the allegations of insurgency against government. He was arrested for several times for various agitation activities against the government from December 1963 to June 1st 1977.
