Bangladesh's tax revenue in the financial year through June 2004 rose more than nine percent from the year before, but was below target, officials from the National Board of Revenue (NBR) said on Tuesday.
Revenues totalled 260.29 billion taka ($4.39 billion), short of the target of 270.5 billion taka, despite a drive by the tax agency to improve tax collection.
Officials said the agency did not meet the target for tax collection from large tax payers, which could have made a big difference to the outcome.
NBR Chairman Khairuzzaman Chowdhury said the agency had set an ambitious target in the first place.
Income tax revenue fell 6.6 billion taka to 46.1 billion taka in the latest fiscal year. The target had been lowered to 52.7 billion taka from 53.65 billion taka.
