imageKARACHI: Senator Saeed Ghani of Pakistan Peoples Party has underscored the urgency for a third party study ascertaining the performance of units privatised in the country on previous occasions.

Delivering a lecture, "political economy of privatisation," at Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) he said the need of the hour is to improve the mechanism of the national institutions with major focus towards their performance enhancement.

The PPP Senator was also of the opinion that things were not as bad as they were being portrayed.

"As a matter of fact, the society had made remarkable progress in every aspect of life while there was always enough room for further improvement," he said.

The senior political activist urged the students as well as people in general to evaluate their role and overcome the tendency to shift one's responsibility on to the other's shoulders.

"Otherwise our ambition and dream to transform Pakistan into a real welfare state may never come true," said Senator Saeed Ghani.

Later replying to questions raised by the students, he cited privatisation a manifestation of capitalism.

He said it was a moral as well as a legal obligation of the government to ensure that masses get better means of living.

Senator Ghani on the occasion also deplored the culture of favoritism and said it had already caused severe damage to the country, particularly its economy.
