ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday observed that education was the most neglected area in the country which was gross violation of Article 25 (A) of the Constitution of Pakistan.
The court also observed that the provision of education was included as the fundamental right of every child under the said article which was not being followed in its true letter and spirit.
A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry and Justice Gulzar Ahmed resumed hearing in a suo-motu case regarding ghost schools through out the country.
During the course of proceeding, inquiry reports on the conditions of schools from the District and Session Judges, as directed by the apex court during the last proceeding, were presented before the bench.
The court took report from one district each from all the four provinces as a token check on the condition of schools.
In the district of Tharparker, Sindh, the court noted that there were total 3307 schools out of which 2898 were boys schools while 409 were girls.
The report stated that the ratio of school going children was 50 per cent and not 70 per cent as claimed by the education department.
In the report of Rajanpur district in Punjab, there were 19 non-functional schools through out the district.
In district Chaghi of Balochistan, there were total 12388 schools out of which 12082 were functional, 274 were non-functional 25 were under occupation while 7 were ghost schools.
The Deputy Advocate General Khyber Pakhtunkwa and Islamabad also submitted their reports before the bench.
However, the bench expressed its serious concerns over the education system and the pathetic conditions of schools through out the country.
Later, the court reserved its arguments for the final judgment based upon the submitted reports.
