imageKARACHI: Scuffles are not uncommon in prisons across the globe, but rarely do we hear of actions taken against jailing authorities. Sarabjit Singh, a 49-year-old spy serving a life sentence in a Pakistani prison was allegedly attacked by other inmates, and later lost his life after succumbing to his injuries.

The recent incident has led to many Bollywood bigwigs lashing out at both the Pakistani and Indian governments’ failures to adequately provide protection to Sarabjit. Deeply saddened by the distressing news, Bollywood stars including Salman Khan, Farhan Akhtar, Javed Akhtar, Mahesh Bhatt, Madhur Bhandarkar and Sonam Kapoor tweeted their displeasure over the recent incident.

Javed Akhtar reportedly regards this event “worse than Kargil” whereas Salman Khan reportedly considers Sarabjit’s death “freedom.” Salman Khan, an enthusiastic supporter of Sarabjit Singh also launched an online petition for his release in early 2012. Indian composer and singer Aadesh Shrivastav, allegedly holds the Indian government equally responsible for Sarabjit’s death.

The incident has reportedly deeply-affected relations between neighboring countries India and Pakistan. However, it is hoped that the government will conduct a proper investigation into the incident in an effort to save the deteriorating relationship between the two nations.
