YANGON: At least 11 people have died -- mainly gold miners -- and four others remain missing after heavy rains battered townships in eastern Myanmar, police said Friday.
Relief teams were battling to reach the areas hit by rains near Kalaw in southern Shan State, according to the country's Red Cross, which earlier put the death toll at 16.
"A tree fell onto the building where gold mine workers lived," on Thursday killing six people while two others died nearby, Myanmar Police Force said in a post on its official Facebook page.
Three other people died and four more are still missing at another gold mine nearby, the post said, adding around 170 buildings including two schools were destroyed by the fierce weather.
Earlier Kyaw San Win, disaster management officer for Myanmar's Red Cross, said 16 people had died, citing figures from local authorities.
"There was very heavy rain for a couple of days. I think it caused landslides," he added.
