Chile peso strengthens over 1pc in wake of Fed

SANTIAGO: Chile's peso strengthened 1.05 percent in opening trade on Friday to trade at 467.80 per US dollar, reaching a new over one-year high, after the Federal Reserve unveiled its new plan to stimulate the US economy.

The currency has appreciated more than 10 percent this year against the US dollar, sparking market talk the central bank could launch another foreign exchange intervention to stem further strengthening.

But bank president Rodrigo Vergara said last week that existing "worry" over the strong Chilean peso did not yet warrant intervention.
