LONDON: Jammu and Kashmir Council for Human Rights (JKCHR) attending the 16th Session of UN Human Rights Council has lodged a protest with the German Mission in Geneva on the insulting remarks made by new German interior minister, Hans-Peter Friedrich about Islam and Muslims living in Germany.

In a letter of protest delivered to the Permanent Mission of Germany to the UN in Geneva Dr. Syed Nazir Gilani, Secretary General JKCHR,took exception to the German minister's remarks that "Islam in Germany is not something substantiated by history at any point, nor has it any major role in German culture".

Dr. Nazir Gilani in a media release thanked Markus Droge the Lutheran Bishop of Berlin, for his expression of shock on the singling out of Muslims by German politicians.

The letter of protest states that the remarks of the German interior minister are very unfortunate and offensive not only to four million Muslims living in Germany but should be regarded offensive by every citizen of Germany who subscribes to a democratic and open society. JKCHR Secretary General has said that Muslims who have made Germany their home should not shun away from learning German language because knowledge of various languages is stressed in the Holy Quran as well.

"Muslims should not hesitate to integrate but they should not be prepared to be ripped of their culture and other languages required for adaptation."

He added that Muslims should be proud of their culture and civilization and should ensure that this richness is reflected in their daily lives in Germany or any other country of their domicile.
