The City Council of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation on Monday called for investigations of fake encounters and extrajudicial killings in Karachi as police action against terrorists. It urged the government to arrest of Rao Anwar, the suspended SSP of Malir, and his team involved in the killing of South Waziristan native Naqeebullah in a fake encounter on January 13.
Mayor Waseem Akhtar, who was chairing the session, recalled that Rao Anwar took him from judicial custody and lodged 20 false FIRs against him in a single day. Not a single FIR was registered against him before. the mayor said,
The mayor urged the judiciary to give exemplary punishment to those who misuse their powers. The law required, Waseem said, that an accused be presented before the court immediately after his arrest. But the law is largely ignored in the country, which is why anti-terrorism laws are misused.
Council member Amanullah Afredi said that Rao Anwar has orphaned hundreds of children through extrajudicial murders in Karachi. Junaid Mukati said the Sohrab Goth Jirga camp established by the Mehsud tribe to express their condolence and solidarity with the family of Naqeebullah has so far received 440 complaints of missing persons.
Tehseen Abdi another council member, recalled that it was in 1992 when members of the Muhajir community were being killed and society remind silent over the crime. Had people raised their voice against the brutality, the murder of Naqeebullah and hundreds of others would not have taken place. On October 10, 1995, he added, Zeeshan Hyder Abidi became a victim in the same manner.
