the Supreme Court on Monday sought a report from the Ministry of Information pertaining to the delay in the filling of vacant slots of the managing director of Pakistan Television Corporation. Heading a three-member bench, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar resumed hearing of the plea of the PTV employees over non-appointment of a new managing director of PTV.
Seeking details of the amount paid to Attaul Haq Qasmi, former chairman of the PTV, the bench issued directives to additional secretary of the Ministry of Information to submit a comprehensive report in this regard. The federal government had appointed Attaul Haq Qasmi as chairman after the retirement of former managing director Muhammad Malick.
Additional Attorney General Waqar Rana said that in order to make the PTV a viable state broadcaster in the electronic media, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had on January 22 constituted a six-member committee headed by Marriyum Aurangzeb, Minister of State for Information, to bring about reforms in the state-run TV channel.
He further said that after the retirement of former managing director in February 2016, the government advertized his post on September 23, 2017, in which almost 56 candidates applied for the post. However, none of the candidates met the criteria set in the advertisement. The hearing of the matter was adjourned till Thursday.
