Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has directed the Ministry of Commerce and relevant missions abroad to maintain a focused approach towards ensuring continuation of GSP Plus status for the country and take all necessary measures to maintain the growth-oriented trend. While chairing a meeting to review the efforts for GSP Plus status for Pakistan beyond 2018, sources stated that Prime Minister Abbasi was given a detailed briefing on current trend of exports as well as on GSP plus status.
An official stated that the meeting was informed about over 14 percent growth in exports in month-on-month in December while growth in imports was around 10 percent. These are encouraging signs for growth in exports and an indication that measures taken by the government have started showing results.
The meeting was briefed by the Commerce Division in detail regarding Pakistan's compliance with the requirements of GSP Plus. The meeting was told that government has submitted periodical review report and it has been examined by the European Union. The Commerce Division stated that it is optimistic about the positive outcome of the periodical review and the GSP Plus status will obtain a roll-over for another three years term. The meeting was also informed that over the past five years Pakistan's exports to European Union registered 45 percent increase while value added textile products registered 88 percent increase.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Commerce Pervaiz Malik, Advisor to PM on Finance Miftah Ismail and senior officials from Commerce, Foreign Affairs, Economic Affairs, Human Rights and Religious Affairs Divisions.
