Vice-Chancellor Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU), Dr Javed Ashraf Friday said that University administration was helpless before drug mafia and land grabbers, saying despite hectic efforts, it couldn't fully succeed to purge the university of drugs and encroachments.
Addressing a press conference, he said the menace of drugs was not limited to the QAU but the curse was raising its ugly head in other educational institutions as well. He said the university was established on over 1,700 acres of land but it lacked boundary wall.
Dr Ashraf said the QAU administration tried to control the menace of drugs in the premises of the university but it failed in this regard. He further said that 200 security guards were working in three shifts but they were not enough to fully secure the university premises.
He said the QAU administration was grateful to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for releasing Rs 55 million for the boundary wall of the varsity. The Secretary to the President has also pledged for providing funds in this regard, he added.
The vice-chancellor QAU said they knocked each and every government's door to seek assistance against the encroachers but all in vain. However, as the Supreme Court of Pakistan has taken notice of the issue, it was inappropriate to talk on the matter anymore. He said that every measure would be taken to get the land vacated from the encroachers.
He informed that QAU was ranked number 1 throughout Pakistan, adding that international institutions were praising the university for its research work. "We want that law enforcement agencies (LEAs) should ensure law and order in the university premises," he added.
Replying to a question, Dr Ashraf said that university spokesperson issued a statement to media without taking him on board and his prior permission. However, the VC added that he has full confidence in the spokesperson.
Earlier, a university statement had implied that the Higher Education Commission and some faculty members were trying to remove the vice-chancellor in an effort to protect land grabbers.
