The Senate''s sub-committee on Cabinet Secretariat on Thursday sought the record of tender documents of Quetta International Airport (QIA) along with a brief on the cost of electrical items, CCTV cameras and sound system from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
A meeting of the sub-committee convened by Senator Kalsoom Perveen was of the view that there are a lot of loopholes in awarding uplift work of Quetta International Airport. "Everything is on record and even the tender process was not transparent," she added. It was told that no document pertaining to tender notices and prequalification has been provided to the members of the committee.
The committee observed that Quetta airport is a mega project, which is supposed to bring business with the initiation of international flights to Russia, Dubai, Afghanistan and the Middle-Eastern countries. The CAA secretary, however, sought time to initiate an inquiry into the loopholes, adding that the committee will be informed in this regard by January 20.
Senator Mir Yousaf said that tender of Quetta airport was issued in 2015 and seven companies submitted applications to acquire the project. Surprisingly, only two companies participated in the bidding process. The companies were supposed to submit guarantee within 28 days. However, even after the passage of five months, the guarantees were not submitted, while the bank cheque was bogus. Six hundred million rupees are recorded as embezzled in the bidding process and the matter was forwarded to Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), which has not yet investigated the matter.
