The Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar in collaboration with Pakistan Scientific and Technological Information Centre (PASTIC) and National Academy of Young Scientists (NAYS), organized a conference on "Sustainability in process Industry".
Engr. Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gilani, Vice Chancellor, UET Peshawar was the chief guest on the occasions. In his inaugural speech, he said, Sustainable development has become an important environmental benchmark for both process industries and the service industries.
In this context the collaboration among all the stack holders from academia, industry and sponsoring agencies becomes inevitable.
Dr Saeed Gul, Chairman Department of Chemical Engineering welcomed the guest and elaborates the importance of sustainable development of process industry. He highlighted the achievements and activities which the department of chemical engineering is carrying out for sustainability in process industry.
Dr Akram Shaikh, Director General PASTIC, reiterated his contual support to the universities for arranging seminars which addresses the issues related to the society like sustainable development in process industry.
The conference hosted two plenary lectures, six keynote lectures and 36 presentations by eminent scientists and engineers from universities and industries.
A large number of participants from industry like Cherat Cement, Askari Cement, Attock Oil Refinery, PARCO and OGDCL also participated into the event.
Dr Mickae Harasak from Technical University of Vienna, Austria delivered his talk on sustainability in process industry through video link.
At the end, a Panel discussion between participants from industry and university was also held.
After thorough discussion, the participants were agreed upon that University industry-linkages should be enhanced. Industry should encourage students for regular industrial visits and internships. Industry should also sponsor research grants to academia.
Industry should itself establish Research and Development (R&D) cell. Govt should in this regard waive off a certain percentage of taxes. It was also decided that university should include courses of sustainability in its curriculum.
A poster exhibition of final year projects of Chemical Engineering students was also held where awards were distributed amongst top three position holders.
