Dinosaur skeletons sold for over $3.4 million at auction in Paris

Two dinosaur skeletons of the late Jurassic period have been sold for more than $3.4 million at an auction held in Paris.

The skeletons were of a 12-meter-long diplodocus from nose to tail and a 3.8-meter-long allosaurus. They were put up for auction Wednesday where they were sold for over $1.7 million each.

According to NDTV, the dinosaurs were said to walk on Earth more than 150 million years ago, during the late Jurassic period. The diplodocus was a herbivore giant whereas, the allosaurus was a carnivore dinosaur. The two dinosaurs were amazingly restored with allosaurus containing ’60 sharpened teeth’.

The Drouot auction house informed that the artifacts were bought online by a foreign buyer whose nationality was not revealed. “It shows the interest of a new generation of fans both for the Jurassic era and the tools of the 21st century,” said fossil sales expert Iacopo Briano.

Every year, five dinosaurs are put up for auction across the world and mostly bought by ultra-rich collectors or various museums.

“Dinosaurs have become cool, trendy - real objects of decoration, like paintings," Briano said ahead of the auction. He also cited Hollywood actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Nicolas Cage as fans of such enormous prehistoric ornaments, reported Telegraph.
