Serbia and Bosnia are to reopen the Belgrade- Sarajevo railway line in 2009, 17 years after it was closed by war in former Yugoslavia. The line is due to go back into operation in September, when the autumn schedule comes into effect, the railway announced in Sarajevo. The war erupted in Bosnia in April 1992.
Bosnia and Serbia were federal parts of the former Yugoslavia, along with Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Macedonia, all of which are sovereign states today. Slovenia fought a brief war for independence from Belgrade in 1991, while Croatia and Bosnia saw conflict on their soil until 1995. Serbias province Kosovo also declared independence, in 2008, nine years after the majority Albanians launched an insurgency against Belgrades rule.
