Around heritage sites: Supreme Court orders removal of encroachments
The Supreme Court has ordered all the four provincial governments to remove encroachments around the national heritage sites in three months.
A two-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by CJP Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry and Justice M. Javed Buttar heard suo motu notices with regard to the encroachments on government lands around the national heritage sites in Lahore like Shahi Qila, Shalimar Gardens and Jehangir Mausoleum.
Punjab Advocate General Aftab Iqbal Chaudhry submitted that Evacuee Trust Department had been selling government lands to the people who had built shops and houses on the government property. The court gave three months to the provincial governments for removal of these encroachments and adjourned the case till November 2007.
