Pakistan amongst the top victims of terrorism

Published December 21, 2012 Updated December 21, 2012 12:00am

Terrorism is one of the most emotive subjects of our time. The words of Steve Killelea Executive Chairman of Institute of Economic and Pakistans position in the inaugural index are no exaggeration of the countrys image in the west.
Distressing yet expected, the new Global Terrorism Index by the Australian think tank shows that Pakistan comes second only to Iraq for the greatest impact of all the suicide attacks, shooting, bombing and terrorist activities that take place in the country.
However, Indias ranking amongst those hardly hit with terrorism came as a surprise for many. According to the study, the Pakistan along with its notorious neighbours Afghanistan and India account for an average of 11 percent of global terrorist incidents from 2002 to 2009.
The Index pushes the perceptual envelope from the big terrorist events to all those that involve coercion and violence to attain political, economic, religious and social goals. The index is a balanced score number of terrorist incident, fatalities, injuries and property damage, with wieghtages assigned in that order.
An important feature of the index details how poverty is not the prime reason for the uprisings around the world; terrorism is more rampant in lower middle-income countries than low income and poor countries. Moreover, there is higher correlation found between terrorism and political instability, lack of cohesion between social and religious groups, and violation of human rights, all rife in Pakistan.
On the brighter side, the study does give some home for the global terrorism trend which has leveled after a sharp rise from 2003 to 2007. However, the widespread volatility in the MENA region and no short term resolution to the terrorism in South Asia remain the risks that could dampen any optimism.
