NEW DELHI: A defendant in the New Delhi gang-rape and murder trial said Friday he was assaulted inside jail by inmates to stop him from appearing for a job recruitment test, according to the Press Trust of India.
Vinay Sharma, who along with five others had allegedly gang-raped a 23-year-old student in a moving bus in December appeared before the court with a fractured right hand, the news agency said.
Earlier this week, Sharma had sought "proper food and newspapers" inside prison as he wanted to take a written examination for a clerical position with the Indian Air Force. The examination is scheduled later this month.
Sharma's lawyer, A.P. Singh told the judge that his client was attacked by fellow inmates and therefore he must be shifted to other premises.
The medical report presented by the jail authorities showed that Sharma's elbow was fractured "due to a fall".
Yogesh Sharma, the judge of the special fast track court ordered the jail authorities to submit fresh medical reports of Vinay Sharma and instructed them to ensure the safety of all the accused.
Last month, the group's alleged ringleader, Ram Singh was found hanged in Delhi's Tihar prison. The police said he had committed suicide but Singh's family allege that he was murdered.
Five men and a 17-year-old teenager were arrested soon after the death of the rape victim, who succumbed to horrific internal injuries after nearly two weeks in hospital.
The case has led to months of soul-searching over widespread sexual crime in India, resulted in tougher laws to punish rapists and focused global attention on violence against women in the country.
