NBP to open 40 new branches in rural areas

nbpISLAMABAD: President of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) Asif Brohi Tuesday said that the bank would open 40 new branches in rural areas for the development of agriculture sector.

The NBP President was speaking in the meeting of Senate's Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs held here here under the chairmanship of Islamuddin Shaikh.

The NBP launched its credit card scheme in 1995 but could not continue it due to some reasons, he said and added that the scheme would be launched again soon.

Likewise, the car loan scheme was launched, which could not continue as the bank had not a proper system to handle it. The scheme will also be again launched in the future, the NBP President added.

Brohi said that the bank had witnessed 70 per cent growth in the agriculture loans, 190 per cent in gold loans and 53 per cent in the commercial and corporate sector loans.

He said that the NBP had a country-wide network of 1,283 branches, including 644 in Punjab, 229 in Sindh, 213 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 62 in Balochistan with 27 overseas branches in 19 countries. Its deposits had crossed Rs 1 trillion.

He told the the committee that the bank had already disbursed agri loans of Rs 45 billion among around 250,000 farmers at nominal mark-up rate.

Senator Syeda Sughra Imam, speaking in the meeting, said that the representation of all provinces in the executive positions should be ensured, especially taht of Balochistan.

The sector-wise detail of investment made by the bank should be furnished to the committee, she said adding that the province wise detail of deposits should also be submitted to committee.

Senator Sardar Fateh Muhammad Muhammad Hassani said that China had launched a scheme of loans for the mining sector and the NBP should also initiate such scheme for development of the said sector.

Deputy Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Kazi Abdul Muktadir said that every bank had a policy to waive off the loans under certain conditions and the waived off amount had always been reflected in the balance sheet of the bank for public.

During flood of 2010-11, some schemes for writing off loans were announced by the different banks to give relief to the flood affected people, he added.
