Pad 39A has been the starting point of missions dating back to the Apollo era, including the first moon landing in 1969. SpaceX is currently leasing the launch pad from NASA.

It is the first time a private company has ever sent people into orbit. The launching took place from Florida and it is the first time in nearly a decade that people have launched to orbit from American soil since the end of the Space Shuttle Program in 2011.

On Wednesday, the first launching attempt was called off due to bad weather.
