  • Prime minister says there is dire need to conserve forests.
  • Imran says importance of forests should be taught as a subject to children in schools.
  • Those who have occupied the forests should be considered as criminals and sent to jail: Imran.

(Karachi) Prime Minister Imran Khan has said tree plantation holds key importance for Pakistan and there is need to educate youngsters about the significance of forests.

Addressing the participants at the inauguration of the spring tree plantation drive in Mianwali on Sunday, Imran said, "I want all the people of Piplan especially the youth to listen to me carefully because your youth don't yet realise the importance of tree plantation for Pakistan."

"I want that the importance of this is taught as a subject to children in schools," he said.

He said Pakistan is blessed with natural resources. The PM maintained, "We have destroyed our forests and there is dire need to plant trees for eco-friendly environment."

He said, "The British left 20,000 acre forest in Kundian but we failed to conserve it."

Imran highlighted, "We did not utilize the resources that the nature has given us which is a matter of concern."

The prime minister said those who have occupied the forests should be considered as criminals and action should be taken against them. "Such elements should be sent behind bars and awarded punishment."

He said, "If we continue to destroy the forests, it will affect the environment which could prove disastrous for us."

He said that Pakistan is also likely to be affected by climate change more than other countries because the country depended on rivers and 80pc of water in its rivers came from glaciers.

Regarding availability of facilities in Mianwali, he pointed out the government is establishing hospitals and schools in the district to facilitate the masses.

Later, the premier also attended Namal University’s seventh convocation ceremony and advised the students from the graduating class to take the path less trodden.

He said, “Follow your heart, passion comes from the heart. What your passion is, that will propel you. In a competition of talent versus passion, passion will always win […] and when you take a decision, burn your boats.”

He advised them to set the right direction for themselves, and said that whatever they “can imagine can be done”.

He encouraged the students to not be demoralised during difficult times and use their education to analyse their mistakes correctly.

“The only one of you who will succeed is the one who challenges himself,” he said.

“Difficult times come to teach you, man does soul-searching in difficult times … your education gives you an advantage,” the PM remarked.
