'Indignant' China to take strong measures to counter Hong Kong bill proposed by US

• China has urged US to stop meddling into their matters.
• Hong Kong is part of China and an internal affair, Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement.

Following the United States’ legislation to show support for pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, China has warned US to stop meddling and has threatened to take counter measures against the bill.

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act to show support for the ongoing protests in Hong Kong. In a statement issued by the foreign ministry, China has showed its indignation over the bill and said that Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs and cannot be interfered by any outside forces, international media reported.

The statement further said that regarding the wrong decision of US, the Chinese side will have to enact effective countermeasures, firmly safeguard Chinese sovereignty, security and development interests.

“What Hong Kong faces is not the so-called human rights and democracy issue at all, but the issue of stopping violence, reinstating order and upholding the rule of law as soon as possible,” said the statement.

Major protests in Hong Kong, over a controversial extradition bill, began in early June and have persisted in the months since. The peaceful protests have turned violent with police firing tear gas to disperse the demonstrator.
