  • Umar stepped down as finance minister on April 18.
  • "I have obtained PM's consent to not take any cabinet position," the leader had tweeted.

Amid major reshuffle, the government has decided to again offer former finance minister Asad Umar the petroleum division which the minister had already turned down in April.

On Monday, during Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) parliamentary committee meeting, Prime Minister Imran Khan had announced his decision to change portfolios of some his ministers. The PM will likely request Umar to take the charge of Petroleum Division, sources said, local media reported. On April 18, Umar has stepped down from the position of finance minister. Before his resignation, he was offered the energy division; however he had turned it down.

It is also rumored that the portfolios of Fawad Chaudhry, Firdous Ashiq Awan, Shafqat Mehmood, Zubaida Jalal, Ali Mohammad Khan and Ijaz Shah will also be changed. PTI leader Babar Awan may be made a special assistant to the Prime Minister.

Last night, the PM also approved the appointment of Munir Akram as Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York who will replace Maleeha Lodhi. According to a statement issued, Additional Secretary at Ministry of Foreign Affairs Muhammad Aejaz has been appointed as ambassador of Pakistan to Hungary and Syed Sajjad Haider, presently serving as charge d’affaires of Pakistan to Pyongyang will be Pakistan’s new ambassador to Kuwait.
