Two killed, several injured as rains lash city

• More than 350 feeders of the Karachi Electric Supply Company tripped affecting power supply to different areas.
• Commuters were stranded for hours in traffic gridlock as rainwater accumulated on different streets.
• Around 130mm of rain has been recorded in Karachi during the past few weeks.

(Karachi) At least two people were killed while several injuries were reported in rain-related incidents across the city on Friday. Rain disrupted daily life and left many thoroughfares flooded.

The rains lowered the sweltering temperatures and brought a relief to the residents of the city. Meanwhile, more than 350 feeders of the Karachi Electric Supply Company tripped affecting power supply to different areas of the metropolis, including Azizabad, North Karachi, North Nazimabad, Gulistan-e-Johar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal and other vicinities. Commuters were stranded for hours in traffic gridlock as rainwater accumulated on different streets.

While commenting on the situation, Chief Metrologist Sardar Sarfraz said that the recent spell of monsoon rain in Karachi was extraordinary. He added that around 130mm of rain has been recorded in Karachi during the past few weeks.

A few days ago, a false ceiling at a shopping mall located in Gulshan-e-Iqbal partially collapsed following heavy rain, leading to panic and frenzy amongst the customers at the venue.

Earlier, the Pakistan Metereological Department (PMD) issued a press advisory regarding the penetration of monsoon currents in Pakistan from the Bay of Bengal. The PMD officials warned that heavy rains could hit Sindh, especially Karachi from September 26 to September 30.
