JERUSALEM: China's technology giant Lenovo overtook US giant HP in computer sales in Israel in the fourth quarter last year, according to data released Monday by the market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC).

According to the data, in 2018's fourth quarter, 219,000 new computers (desktops and laptops) were sold in Israel, 31.7 percent of them are Lenovo's.  Next on the list is HP, with 27.7 percent of the quarter's sales, followed by US giant Dell, with 20.4 percent.

The surprising company on the list is the local computer retailer Ivory, which is in the fifth place with 3.3 percent of sales in the quarter.

Ivory sells desktop computers in its own branding, thus maintaining a larger market share in Israel than global giants such as Apple and Toshiba.  IDC figures also show that computer sales in Israel fell by 3.7 percent in the last quarter of 2018.

In Israel, only Lenovo, HP and Dell sell both laptops and desktop computers to all market categories -- organizations, private users, and educational institutions.
