KARACHI: Sindh Governor Imran Ismail Sunday called for strict implementation of all laws in true spirit to safeguard human rights in every sector of life so as to achieve larger development and prosperity in the country.

"The salvation of real development lies in safeguarding human rights that is why the present government is striving to safeguard the rights of all workers, traders, businessmen, minorities and people belonging to various segments of the society", the governor said in a statement in connection with International Human Rights Day to be observed on Monday (Dec 10).

Imran Ismail said that men, women and children in Pakistan need help for jobs, security and healthcare, education, therefore, all political, social, religious, human rights and other civil society organisations would have to renew their commitment to serve the humanity and safeguard their rights in true manner.

The governor said the women and children were vulnerable segment of the society and the cases of violence against women and children were a stigma for the society. "It is the need of the hour that civil society organisations adopt a positive and pragmatic approach and come forward with concrete measures to save women and children from violence," he added.

Imran Ismail said that bonded labour and discriminatory policies in private organisations was also a factor that needs to be addressed.       He said that private organisations must pay salaries to workers on time besides providing fringe benefits along with health, education and transport allowance, while the provision of minimum wages to workers should also be ensured so as to end bias in the society.

He said all human beings were born with equal rights and fundamental freedoms, so "we should promote the achievements of human rights defenders who fight to end discrimination".

"We all should protest against abuses of human rights, advocate for justice and protect the victims of human rights violations", he stressed.
