Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf's (PTI) Mahmood Khan defeated on Thursday Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal’s (MMA) Mian Nisar Gul, becoming the new chief minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

Newly-elected speaker of KP Assembly, Mushtaq Ghani, presided over the session. PTI's nominee Khan secured 77 votes while his opponent from MMA secured 33 votes, local media reported. PTI has grabbed the CM spot for the second consecutive time.

After Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz's tenure ended, Pervez Khattak stepped down from his post as the CM. Dost Mohammad Khan was then appointed as the caretaker CM of KP.

As per the division of the house system, the MPAs were asked to move to the respective lobbies dedicated to their preferred candidates. All those supporting Gul's candidature were asked to move to Lobby 1, while supporters of Khan were asked to move to Lobby 2.

Previously, Khan has held the portfolio of sports, culture and irrigation in KP.
