Softbank, a Japanese mobile carrier, and Honda have recently signed a partnership in which both companies will research on connected cars. Using Softbank’s 5G technology the cars will communicate.

Softbank is already testing 5G in Japan, with perspective to start the services by 2020, Engadget reported. But first it will set up the 5G communication system in Honda to see how its cars can communicate with one another over the connection.

Honda will first inspect how the connection works and whether it is stable enough in their cars at high speed and then enact the connections, TechJuice reported. Softbank, however, says that it will put enough antennas on Honda’s cars to make the connection sufficient.

The two companies will be tracking the results to develop the vehicles' on-board tech and antennas.

Softbank will be installing 5G base stations at Hokkaido, the auto-maker's Takasu Proving Ground closed test course in Japan. Honda’s smart cars will soon be talking over wireless networks while speeding around the 6.8 km circular course.

While tests will be held at urban areas, Softbank will expand its connection to rural areas so that the cars can communicate anywhere they go.

Softbank plans to bring 5G network to the public by 2020 while the stabilized versions of connected cars will be launched by 2025.
