UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan on Wednesday reiterated its stance of supporting comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including that of the Security Council.
Addressing the 70th anniversary session of the UN General Assembly, the Prime Minister said, "We should strive to adapt this world organization so as to respond effectively to the current and emerging challenges that confront us all."
He said Pakistan supported a comprehensive reform of the United Nations. "We need a Security Council that is more democratic, representative, accountable and transparent."
"A Council that reflects the interests of all member states, in accordance with the principle of sovereign equality. Not a Council, which is an expanded club of the powerful and privileged," the Prime Minister said. Pakistan as a member of the Uniting for Consensus (UfC) group opposes any addition to the permanent seats on the 15-member Security Council. It, however, advocates expansion in non-permanent seats for longer duration than the existing two-year term.
