BRISBANE: A breakthrough agreement between the United States and China on reducing carbon emissions proves that a long-awaited global deal on climate change is achievable, US President Barack Obama said Saturday.
"If China and the US can agree on this, then the world can agree on this -- we can get this done," he said in a speech on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Brisbane.
Announcing a $3 billion contribution to a UN-backed climate mitigation fund, Obama said all countries must play their part, regardless of whether they were advanced or developing economies.
"No nation is immune, every nation has a responsibility to do its part," he said. "We have got to step up."
The surprise Sino-US deal to implement ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets was announced earlier this week by Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
